My journey into the Natural Health industry began 20 years ago when after a decade of being on a myraid of prescription drugs my health hit rock bottom. I was introduced to a medical doctor specializing in Environmental Medicine and was found to have multiple sensitivity disorder… probably a combination of the prescription drugs and the chemicals in my environment. He said if I would have continued down the medical path I would not have been able to read a newpaper or magazine; and wouldn’t have been able to walk into a hair salon or shopping centre!

Through an elimination diet, mega vitamin therapy, herbal teas, juicing, and mediation, I was able to restore my health to have the children I wasn’t supposed to have; and to live without the antibiotics they said I would have to be on for the rest of my life.

I went on to study Herbalogy, Reflexology, TChineseM, Homeopathy, and almost anything I could get my head around and into. I was and still am grateful for the ability to search for answers when there are none available through medical means. This is freedom of access to information.

I am likewise passionate about offering choices to people desperate to reclaim their health. This is the freedom of access to natural health products, whether it be herbs, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, or probiotics. I needed them all…life depends on them. Please help us to insure that healing through natural health products can remain a choice available to all.

I was diagnoised with hypothyroidism in 1988 and began treatment with sythroid, however, my TSH levels were very unstable, so the dose of my thyroid medicine flucuated between .75 mcg. to .300 mcg. One time when I presented the prescription to the pharmacist, he refused to fill the it until he confirmed the dose with my doctor as he considered it too high a dose.

In 1998, after years of poor health, constant hypothyroid symptoms, and additional prescriptions, I felt so ill, with all the side effects which now included constant flank pain, unable to pee, yet, an urgency to pee, and, no relief from the conditions the medications were treating, and while taking VIOXX, which caused serious heart palpitaions, and a trip to the ER.

I began to research and choose alternative supplements which started with TG-100, a natural thyroid supplement. After only about 8 months a TSH test showed my thyroid to be fine. I continued another year on this supplement, and stopped altogether. Now, I use iodine ocassionally.

For my other health conditions, I had an ultrasound and it was discovered I have kidney and liver disease. I have used food and supplements since this 2004 diagnosis, and continue to manage without medications, which I cannot take due to the liver and kidney disease. I was even invited to the NIH in Maryland WA, as a research subject. The two specialists both said to me, they are surprised to see my MRI results, as they felt, “I do so well”.

My supplement program changes with my needs, but most of what I use are basic vitamins and aminos: B Complex, Vitamin D, E, C, Zinc, Potassium, Magnesium, MSM, B6(P5P). I also take additional separate B vitamins. The aminos are, glutamine, beta sistorial, gabba, inositol, choline, methionine, proline, tyrosine, taurine, and others. I use usually two or three at a time, and cycle on and off. I also use, NAC, Alpha-lipoic Acid and Acetyl-L-Carnitine.

I used to buy most of my supplements pure, with no fillers and additives,in the US, as the tablets available in Canada, I do not tolerate. B Complex, and a few others I buy locally.

I had become very ill, so ill that I closed my practice and was on my couch with my cat with no hope of getting up again. 49 and demoralized I found a Dr. practicing Integrated Medicine who tested me for heavy metals and found they were very high. I also went off gluten and began to improve after 5 days of a gluten free diet. I decided to proceed with the chelation for heavy metals anyway. To add the removal of metals and toxins from my system I was asked to take Alpha lipoic acid and MSM, as well as, a multivit. I also take several other supplements which this Dr. agreed with.

After a year I was back to work and I had a life again.

CHFA created these ads to raise consumer awareness of natural health products and their importance to Canada. Currently there is the possibility that access to some NHPs may become limited either temporarily or permanently. CHFA is currently working very closely with government representatives to avoid this possibility. But in the coming months, if your right to these products is placed in jeopardy,we may call on you to help us express our concern at the political level. Please stay tuned for updates on this situation.
